About the Author. Born in 1533, Montaigne studied law and spent a number of years working as a counsellor before devoting his life to reading, writing and reflection. He died in 1586. Dr M.A. Screech is regarded as the world's greatest authority on Montaigne.
The Complete Essays of Montaigne translated by M Screech is available as a paperback, and Amazon says it is also available in the alternative Kindle format. I made the mistake of buying the Kindle verison. The Kindle version is NOT the same as the paperback Screech translation. Fortunately, I was able to cancel the order.

Screech gives a history of this idea and describes Montaigne's complex views about What I found most interesting was his description of 'practicing dying'. As I understand it, Montaigne believed that not only did the soul leave the body at death, but could leave the body to varying degrees during life -- as in inspiration, madness and drunkenness.

Rev Professor Michael Andrew Screech was an emeritus fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. In 1992, he was honored as a Chevalier in the French Legion of Honor, in recognition of his translations of Montaigne's Essays.
