Shakespeare’s Montaigne, a selection of essays from the Elizabethan translation of Montaigne by John Florio, appeared in 2014. More modern and accessible English translations of Montaigne’s essays by Donald Frame and M. A. Screech still sell well. In recent years, two popular studies of Montaigne by Frampton and Sarah Bakewell have promised.
If anything, Montaigne demands that we—as students or as parents—take responsibility for our own education and the education of those around us, limiting whatever harms are done, and guiding towards a lifelong ability to learn in order to understand.
Now I have an apish, imitative quality: when I used to write verses (and I never made any but Latin), they evidently discovered the poet I had last read, and some of my first essays have a little exotic taste: I speak something another kind of language at Paris than I do at Montaigne. Whoever I steadfastly look upon easily leaves some.
As well as encouraging intellectual growth, Montaigne also intends to promote wisdom, character and physical development as a way of education the entire person. Montaigne’s assertion is that the purpose behind education should not be for the sole aim of the increase in knowledge, but “to have become better and wiser by it” (112).
Many have made their own Montaigne. Escaping Nazism in World War II, the Jewish writer Stefan Zweig found solace in the Essays. Here I turn to Sarah Bakewell’s excellent book, How to Live: or A Life of Montaigne in One Question and Twenty Attempts at an Answer (2010). Bakewell quotes a letter Zweig wrote to a friend from his “enforced exile.

We may speak of Don Quixote as the “first novel,” or Emerson as the “father” of American poetry, or Augustine’s Confessions as the earliest example of autobiography, and enjoy doing so because it exercises our desire to create ranks, build consensus and celebrate.
In spite of Montaigne’s dismissal of his schooling as a “failure,” significant features of his thought can be traced to his humanist education. Not only did he acquire literacy in French at school, but also he picked up a comic outlook from the plays of Terence in which he acted. Further, George Buchanan exposed the young Montaigne to Reformation ideas.

This article discusses the notion of “the self” in Montaigne. Though this notion did not exist in the French language at that time, Montaigne is often seen as a key thinker in the rise of the modern concept of self. Guided by an overview of the literature addressing this topic, this article explores what the “self” might be for Montaigne and whether he would have used this notion.
Even today’s initiatives in teaching philosophy in schools can look back to Montaigne (and his “On the Education of Children”) as a patron saint or sage. So what are these Essays, which Montaigne protested were indistinguishable from their author? (“My book and I go hand in hand together”). It’s a good question.
Montaigne gives a description of himself in the essays that follow the “To the reader”. The description is often not direct but for a part the kind of person he is must be inferred from and gathered from his discussions of all kinds of themes, varying from military affairs, the education of children, friendship, means of transport, etc., etc.
